Welcome

A personal message from the Headmaster, Mr B T Coulshed.

I am delighted to welcome you to the Parmiter's School website. The website is regularly updated and I hope that it will give you a flavour of the distinctive ethos of our School and will also provide you with all the information that you need.

Parmiter's School was founded in 1681 in Bethnal Green, London, based on the will of Thomas Parmiter, a silk merchant.

The school moved to Hertfordshire in 1977 and was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen on 11 December 1981. From September 1991 to August 1999, Parmiter's was a Grant Maintained school but returned to Voluntary Aided status in September 1999. The school became a Specialist School technology college in September 2000, a music college in 2005, and languages college in 2009.

Parmiter's is a co-educational, all-ability school of 1260 boys and girls, including over 300 students in the Sixth Form. There is a teaching staff of over 90 specialist teachers, who are strongly supported in their work by the 50 members of the non-teaching staff.

At the school, every student is special and is encouraged and guided to attain his or her potential. Academic results are quite outstanding and the value added compares very favourably with schools in similar contexts. Every year, large numbers of Parmiterians go on to the full spectrum of universities including Oxbridge (150 to university in 2009).

Our students are encouraged to participate in a rich variety of extra-curricular activities, including Sport, Music, Drama, Dance, Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and Debating. There is a flourishing House System and all students take part in the very wide range of House events and competitions.

Parmiter's is strongly supported by its community of students, staff, parents, trustees, governors and Old Parmiterians. All students are encouraged to join the Old Parmiterians' Society, founded in 1898, when they leave school and there are many, regular reunions of past students.

Parmiter's School is the core of the strong, vibrant and purposeful Parmiter's community and engenders a supportive and caring family ethos which is much appreciated by all its members.

I hope that you will have the opportunity to visit Parmiter's soon when you would receive a warm welcome.
