Instrumental Music Lessons & Extra-Curricular Music

Instrumental Music Lesson
Parmiter’s School have fantastic peripatetic music staff, employed by the school, who offer private instrumental half-hour long lessons on weekly rotation during the school day.

The instrument lessons offered are: Piano and Keyboard - Violin - Viola - Flute - Clarinet - Oboe  - Bassoon - Saxophone - Trumpet - French Horn - Trombone - Tuba - Singing - Guitar - Drums and Percussion - Recorder - Theory of Music.

Students are often entered for graded examinations following discussion with their teacher; Parmiter’s is a centre for ABRSM examinations and those set by other boards can be taken externally by arrangement with their teacher.

The closing day for applications for the Autumn term is Friday 9 June and further information about individual instrumental tuition, along with the application form can be found on the Parmiters School website here.

Extra-Curricular Music
Music has a prominent role in school life at Parmiter’s.  We recognise that all young people are impacted by music, both individually or collectively, and their experience is always personal and significant.  We are very proud of the many wide-ranging and exciting musical opportunities available to our students and all students are strongly encouraged to join music groups that are appropriate to them.  They find it helps to increase their individual confidence and adds significantly to their personal development and enjoyment of playing.

There are many varied music groups open to new Year 7 students, tailored for specific levels of experience and/or ability.  These mostly involve attendance at lunchtime rehearsals and all contribute to school music, with performances throughout the year as part of the annual school music calendar.  The most popular ones are listed here:

  • Orchestra  (string players grade 4+, woodwind/brass by invitation)
  • String Ensemble (grade 2+)
  • Jazz Workshop (all woodwind, brass or orchestral string instruments grade 3+)
  • Friday Band (woodwind, brass and percussion grade 2+)
  • First Band (beginners - all instruments!)

There may also be opportunities to join smaller groups such as the Saxophone Ensemble, a Guitar Club, Percussion Ensemble, Flute Choir, Brass Ensemble, Recorder Group, Clarinet or Double Reed Ensemble - notices will be displayed in the Music Department in September.

If you would like more information about these groups, please contact Mr Bates, Director of Music, by e-mailing s.bates@parmiters.herts.sch.uk, or students can come and see a member of the music staff at the start of term.

Trips and Visits

Parmiter's School recognises the need to provide a rich and inspiring learning environment to maximise students' learning potential.  As such, we recognise the value of trips and visits to engage students in any given subject or enhance their understanding of the world around them.

Day or overnight trips will be advertised in advance and parental consent will be requested before each trip.  Additionally, from time to time, students will be given the opportunity to participate in local excursions for routine sporting fixtures, environmental studies, etc.

Please see the list of trips that will be running for the academic year 2023-2024 here.
